Picture this:
The year is 2012. You’re nestled behind rain-splattered windows some miles west of Cleveland. Your cold fingers frame your face as you stare with intense focus, intense pride in what you just created.
Across the room, a series of photos are strung along the off-white wall. For each one, you snapped the shutter, carefully extracted the film cartridge in pitch black, developed it beneath the red light of a dark room, and eagerly waited as the photos dripped dry. The result isn’t perfect, light leaks bleed across some of the images, some subjects are out of focus, the overall exposure is uneven with some images too dark and some too light. But they are yours, and you are proud. A passion is planted deep in your chest, glowing the way a red bulb fills in a dark room’s absence of light.
That was the moment that led to my present. The pride I felt in seeing my film developed for the first time, on that rainy Northeast Ohio day, has fueled the years I’ve spent improving my craft.
I graduated with a multimedia journalism degree from Kent State University in 2018. Throughout those four years I pursued every visual storytelling opportunity I could find, I worked as a photo intern for Ohio Magazine, a behind-the-scenes photographer for independent films, a photojournalist for The Kent Stater, and a photographer for The Burr Magazine, all while pursuing various freelance projects from senior portraits to weddings. Two weeks after graduation I moved across state lines to begin my role as managing editor for The Greene County Messenger, where I created most of the publication’s photos. I’ve since transitioned out of the journalism sector full-time to pursue freelance opportunities.
My photographs have also appeared in The Observer-Reporter, The Herald Standard, Earthworks Journal, and Terrible Orange Review.
A full life results in a collection of snapshots, strung together and hung across the back walls of our minds. A photographer’s job, my hope, is to capture those memories, mine and yours, in a tangible way.
Thanks for stopping by.
